THEMIS: Gale Crater – false color

Stream valley in Gale Crater (THEMIS_IOTD_20160126)THEMIS Image of the Day, January 26, 2016. Today’s false color image shows part of the floor of Gale Crater, home of the Curiosity Rover. The location of the rover is to the north of this image. The dark material on the upper left are dunes, the bright material on the upper right is part of the large central deposit of materials (the goal of the rover). The channel at the bottom of the image dissects the crater rim. The THEMIS VIS camera contains 5 filters. The data from different filters can be combined in multiple ways to create a false color image. These false color images may reveal subtle variations of the surface not easily identified in a single band image.
