THEMIS: Wind streaks on Syrtis Major Planum

False-color wind streaks on Syrtis Major (THEMIS_IOTD_20170102)THEMIS Image of the Day, January 2, 2017. Today’s false color image shows several wind streaks in Syrtis Major Planum. Here the winds have blown from the northeast (upper right). As the wind passes over craters, its flow becomes turbulent, which drops dust in the “wind shadows” behind the craters.

The THEMIS VIS camera contains 5 filters. The data from different filters can be combined in multiple ways to create a false color image. These false color images may reveal subtle variations of the surface not easily identified in a single band image.

THEMIS: Gorgonum Chaos in false color

Gorgonum Chaos in false color (THEMIS_IOTD_20161230)THEMIS Image of the Day, December 30, 2016. Today’s false color image shows part of Gorgonum Chaos. Scientists call such terrain as this “chaotic” because the escape of groundwater from the subsurface has undermined the landscape and caused it to collapse.

MARCI weather report, December 19-25, 2016

dec-28-2016Dust storm activity continued to be sparse across most of Mars this past week. A small number of dust-lifting events associated with the north polar hood were observed over northern Tempe and north of Alba Patera. Looking to the southern highlands, a couple local-scale dust storms were spotted over southern Aonia. Closer to the equator, diffuse water-ice clouds were observed over many high relief areas of the low latitudes. Throughout the… [More at link]

Mars Odyssey returning to activity after safe mode

pia04816-16NASA’s Mars Odyssey orbiter, which has been in service at Mars since October 2001, put itself into safe mode — a protective standby status — on Dec. 26, while remaining in communication with Earth.

The Odyssey project team has diagnosed the cause — an uncertainty aboard the spacecraft about its orientation with regard to Earth and the sun — and is restoring the orbiter to full operations. Odyssey’s communication-relay service for assisting Mars rover missions is expected to resume this week, and Odyssey’s own science investigations of the Red Planet are expected to resume next week.

The orbiter’s knowledge of its orientation was restored Dec. 26 by resetting the inertial measurement unit and the circuit card that serves as interface between that sensor, the flight software and the star tracker, for determining spacecraft attitude. The mission last experienced a similar fault and solution in December 2013. [More at link]

THEMIS: Branching channels of Arda Valles

Branching channels in Arda Valles THEMIS_IOTD_20161229)THEMIS Image of the Day, December 29, 2016. Today’s false color image shows some of the many channels that make up Arda Valles. Their shape and meandering courses suggest that they were eroded by flowing streams or rivers.

The THEMIS VIS camera contains 5 filters. The data from different filters can be combined in multiple ways to create a false color image. These false color images may reveal subtle variations of the surface not easily identified in a single band image.
