THEMIS: Danielson Crater dunes – false color

Danielson Crater dune field (THEMIS_IOTD_20151102)THEMIS Image of the Day, November 2, 2015. The THEMIS VIS camera contains 5 filters. The data from different filters can be combined in multiple ways to create a false color image. These false color images may reveal subtle variations of the surface not easily identified in a single band image. Today’s false color image shows part of the floor of Danielson Crater. This crater has deposits of material on the floor that have the appearance of wind erosion. The ridges and elongate hills are indications of wind direction. The dark blue material in this image is sand, most likely basaltic. The sand has formed dunes, but also can be seen filling small valleys to the upper right of the main dune.
