THEMIS Image of the Day, June 12, 2018. Today’s VIS image shows part of a crater located north of Hecates Tholus. The radial grooves in the ejecta blanket are still visible around the crater rim. There is also likely blast … Continue reading
Clays in a grouping of small craters. Beautiful Mars series. [More at links]
THEMIS Image of the Day, April 16, 2018. This VIS image shows several craters. The interior of the central one has retained much of the original topography, including the central peak. The floor has not been smoothed by deposits of … Continue reading
Crater watchin’ in northeast Syrtis Major region. The dunes within the crater are fascinating for their cell shapes, caused by the wind. Beautiful Mars series.
Wonderfully eye-like. Beautiful Mars series.
A mid-latitude crater with a spot in the middle. From orbit, the spot looks black, but we can see in the enhanced color closeup that it’s darker (basaltic?) material on top of the lighter dunes. Beautiful Mars series.
THEMIS Image of the Day, March 26, 2018. Off the image to the right is Yuty Crater, located between Simud and Tiu Valles. The crater ejcta forms the large lobes along the right side of this VIS image. This type … Continue reading
THEMIS Image of the Day, January 15, 2017. This THEMIS image shows part of western Candor Chasma. Near the bottom of the image is an impact crater. Impact craters are relatively rare within all the canyons of Valles Marineris. The … Continue reading
Craters can be very useful in exposing features that were once hidden beneath the surface. Here, the edge of a crater wall exposes a cross-section of enhanced color bedrock in Syrtis Major, a relatively dust-free region of Mars. The diverse … Continue reading
A crater slope in Terra Sirenum mocks us. Beautiful Mars series.
