THEMIS Image of the Day, April 17, 2018. Bonestell Crater is a relatively young crater located in Acidalia Planitia. The grooved surface of the ejecta blanket is evident in this VIS image. The grooves were likely eroded by the outward flow at ground level of the collapsing column of superheated gas and debris that rose above the crater after the impact. Dust blown into the crater and the downslope movement of fine materials from the rim are slowly modifying the crater features.
