Opportunity: Looking north on Wdowiak Ridge

3786-north-panSol 3786, September 18, 2014. The Pancam is looking north from high on Wdowiak Ridge, not far from Ulysses Crater, in this composite of three false-color images created by Holger Isenberg using filtered Pancam frames. The Solander Point rim segment, explored by Opportunity months ago, lies below and in the distance at left.

MAVEN is now orbiting Mars

MAVEN_Mars_arrival_comp-300MAVEN arrived at Mars this evening, firing its six main engines for about half an hour. This adjusted its velocity to allow MAVEN to be captured by Martian gravity. MAVEN’s mission begins with a lopsided, 35-hour initial orbit, which will over time be adjusted to a 4.5 hour science orbit… [More at link]

HiRISE: A million or more years ago…

tumblr_nc0qckSpoy1rlz4gso1_1280A million or more years ago…  Given how “smooth” and eroded the crater is, it’s extremely ancient.

Beautiful Mars series.

HRSC: Hooke Crater in Argyre basin

Hooke_craterHooke Crater is located near the northern edge of the 1800 km-wide Argyre basin, one of the most impressive impact structures on Mars, excavated in a giant collision about 4 billion years ago. Sitting in a flat part of the basin known as Argyre Planitia, Hooke crater has a diameter of 138 km and a maximum depth of about 2.4 km. It is named after the English physicist and astronomer Robert Hooke (1635–1703)… [More at link]

Opportunity: Pancam looks east

3786-interior-panSol 3786, September 17, 2014.  Two red-filtered frames from a Pancam mosaic in progress look over the interior of Endeavour Crater, with its eastern rim segments on the far horizon. The crater is about 22 km (14 miles) wide, with fields of sand dunes scattered across its floor. At left is part of Wdowiak Ridge, which the rover is steadily climbing, and in the middle ground lie the lower slopes of the Cape Tribulation rim segment, which the ridge forms part of. Next target for Opportunity: the edge of Ulysses Crater, a relatively young impact crater.
