Opportunity: Aguas Calientes’ surface texture

5024-mi5023-pancamFCSol 5024, March 13, 2018. The Microscopic Imager moved in close to examine the surface of the target dubbed Aguas Calientes. Mission scientists are hoping to understand the nature of the rock in the outcrop and what created its streaky texture.

At right is a false-color Pancam view from Sol 5023 (Holger Isenberg) looking down on the near end of the large outcrop named Ysleta del Sur, or “the island.” (For a larger view of Ysleta del Sur, see here.) The box indicates the location of the MI mosaic. Click either image to enlarge it.

Opportunity raw images, its latest mission status, location map, and atmospheric opacity, known as tau.
