Nakhla meteorite: newly found mineral features

ovoid structure in NakhlaA new ovoid structure discovered in the Nakhla Martian meteorite is made of nanocrystalline iron-rich clay, contains a variety of minerals, and shows evidence of undergoing a past shock event from impact, with resulting melting of the permafrost and mixing of surface and subsurface fluids. The findings appear in a newly published paper in the journal Astrobiology. While the authors, Elias Chatzitheodoridis (National Technical University of Athens) and Sarah Haigh and Ian Lyon (University of Manchester, UK) do not believe the formation of this structure involved biological materials, that is a possible hypothesis, and they note that evidence exists supporting the presence of niche environments in the Martian subsurface that could support life…. Curiosity’s brushwork on Bonanza King

PIA18602_ipNASA’s Curiosity Mars rover used the Dust Removal Tool on its robotic arm to brush aside reddish, more-oxidized dust, revealing a gray patch of less-oxidized rock material at a target called “Bonanza King,” visible in this image from the rover’s Mast Camera (Mastcam). The Mastcam’s right-eye camera, which has a telephoto lens, took this image on Aug. 17, 2014, during the 722nd Martian day, or sol, of Curiosity’s work on Mars… The rover team is evaluating Bonanza King as a possible drilling target…. Opportunity field report: August 15, 2014

3_sol_3752_ridgeSol 3753 (August 15, 2014) Rover Field Report by Larry Crumpler, MER Science Team & New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science: “Opportunity did the first drives upslope around sol 3745 on its long journey toward the crest of the highest rim segment of Endeavour crater, “Cape Tribulation.” The surface here consists of a smooth regolith streaked with ripples of sand blowing off the plains to the west. There is a long ridge with spectacular rocky outcrops that makes a nice ramp for the first part of the climb… There are some really big rocky outcrops on top of the ridge and we would like to find out what they are. But the slopes of the ridge…” [More at link]
