Opportunity: At the valley’s head

4086-navcamSol 4086, July 23, 2015. The rover is placed where it can study the mostly bare outcrops that form a rough pavement at the head of Marathon Valley. Numerous loose rocks — called “float” by geologists — appear to have fallen or rolled off the slopes of Swann Hill, which lies mostly out of view at upper left. Yesterday’s false-color view may show the rocks’ source areas. (Click the image for a larger version.)
