While Opportunity failed to reach its target at Knudsen Ridge because of the steep slope and loose surface, mission scientists have not given up their goal of finding and studying the water-altered clay minerals spotted here using orbital remote sensing. They have commanded the rover’s Pancam to take a multi-wavelength portrait (still incomplete) of the rover’s current location, focusing on the bare rock and gravel surface of Marathon Valley’s floor.
